Questions shop owners actually ask
Before you install
The questions worth answering before you spend an evening on this.
Do I need a Discogs account?
No. There is no Discogs login step anywhere in the app. Matching runs against Gatefold's own copy of the Discogs catalogue, held on our servers.
That also means we never touch your Discogs seller account — we can't see your listings, your orders or your feedback.
Is this a Discogs sync app?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it because most apps in this corner of the App Store are exactly that. Gatefold does not import your Discogs listings into Shopify, and it does not delist a record on Discogs when it sells in your shop.
What it does is the other half of the job: it takes the records already in your Shopify catalogue and writes down what they actually are — the pressing, the label, the catalogue number, the year, the sleeve notes, the tracklist. If what you need is a pipe between two inventories, this is not that app.
Do I need a Gatefold account too?
No. Everything on this page works from inside Shopify with nothing else signed in. A Gatefold account only adds one thing: a one-click import of stock you already keep in Gatefold's own inventory. If you've never heard of Gatefold before today, you lose nothing by skipping it.
What does it cost to find out whether it works on my stock?
The free plan covers 50 records — enough to run it across a shelf and judge the output on your own catalogue rather than on a demo store. See How the free 50 works below for exactly what happens when you reach it.
What it does to listings you already wrote
The section to read if you have spent years writing your own copy.
Will it overwrite descriptions I wrote myself?
No. Your words are never edited and never deleted. What happens instead is that we add a clearly marked block of pressing details underneath what you wrote.
Three cases, so there are no surprises: if the description is empty, the block becomes the description. If you wrote something, the block goes below it and your text is left exactly as it was. If our block is already there from a previous run, we refresh that block only.
Will it change my product titles?
No. Nothing in the app writes to the title of a product that already exists in your shop. The one place a title is ever set is when you ask Gatefold to create a brand-new product from your own Gatefold inventory.
Will it change my prices or my stock numbers?
No. On a product that already exists in your shop, nothing we do touches price or quantity. There is no repricing feature and there is no inventory sync. Price and quantity are only ever set at the moment Gatefold creates a new product for you from inventory you keep on the Gatefold side.
What happens to my tags?
We add tags, we never remove them. Nothing in the app can delete a tag you put on a product.
What gets added: the genre, the styles, the format, the pressing year, and — if you graded the copy — the media grade plus a Used tag. That last one exists so a “Used vinyl” smart collection builds itself. We never infer New from the absence of a grade, because an ungraded record is one we know nothing about, not one we know is sealed.
What about my photos?
We only add cover art to a product that has no images at all. If you photographed the actual copy — which is the right thing to do for used stock — we leave it alone and add nothing.
There's a “Listing details powered by Gatefold” line at the bottom. Can I remove it?
Today that line is on every listing we write, on every plan, and there is no setting to switch it off. We would rather tell you that here than have you find it after enriching four hundred records.
You can delete it by hand in Shopify like any other text. It will come back if that product is enriched again.
Can I undo an enrichment?
Not in one click — there is no revert button. What we wrote can be edited or deleted by hand in Shopify like anything else on the product. If the problem is a wrong pressing rather than a wrong idea, use Exact pick to choose the right one; enriching again replaces our block rather than adding a second copy.
Matching
Why some records fill themselves in and some ask you a question.
Why did some records enrich instantly and others need me to pick?
Because a barcode names one exact pressing and a title doesn't. A barcoded record can be resolved with no help from you. A record with no barcode has to be found by name, and the name of an album is shared by every pressing of it ever made — so either we take a labelled guess, or you choose. The three rungs are laid out in full on How matching works.
A record came back “no match”. What does that mean?
It means we couldn't find that record in the catalogue. Usually one of:
- The record is too new — a pre-order or a release that isn't out yet has no pressing to describe.
- The barcode in Shopify isn't the record's barcode. Shop-generated SKUs and shelf codes often live in that field.
- It isn't music. Turntables, tote bags and books aren't in the catalogue.
Nothing is written when there's no match, and nothing is marked as failed on the product itself. The record just stays as it was.
It picked the wrong pressing. Now what?
Use Exact pick, search the album and choose the right one. Enriching again replaces our block rather than stacking a second one underneath. This is the usual fix when several pressings share a single barcode, which reissue territories do all the time — when that happens the automatic lane takes the most recent one, and it can be wrong.
Do I need to put the Discogs release ID in my SKU or barcode field?
No. There is nothing to configure and no field to set aside. We don't read your SKUs at all. If the barcode field holds a real UPC we use it; if it doesn't, the other two rungs don't need it.
One thing worth knowing, because it is the only product field we ever write to: when you pick an exact pressing and its barcode field is empty, we fill it in with that pressing's real UPC. It makes your own scanner and shelf labels work, and it means the next time that record is enriched it resolves instantly instead of by name. If the field already has something in it — a real barcode or one of your own shelf codes — we leave it exactly as it is. We never overwrite it.
Plans and limits
How does the free 50 work?
You can enrich 50 records on the free plan. The count is of records you've enriched, not of attempts — a record that came back “no match” costs nothing, and re-enriching one you've already done doesn't use a second slot. So fixing a wrong pressing is always free.
When you reach 50, new enrichment stops and the app says so. Nothing already written is removed, hidden or degraded, and the 50 records you enriched stay enriched whatever you do next.
If a record has two versions in my shop, is that one or two?
Two. The count is per version of a product, because each version is a separate copy with its own barcode and its own pressing.
Showing it on your storefront
Do I need a developer to put this on my product pages?
No, and there is no code to paste. In your theme editor: Add section, Apps, Gatefold, then drag it where you want it and save. Four blocks come with the app — Pressing Details, Tracklist, Grail Wall and New Arrivals.
The blocks ship no JavaScript at all, so they can't slow your storefront down.
What happens to the blocks on a product that isn't enriched?
Nothing shows. An un-enriched product renders no block on your live storefront rather than an empty heading. Inside the theme editor you'll see a placeholder so you can tell the block is there while you're positioning it.
Access, privacy and leaving
What can the app actually see?
Products, and nothing else. The app asks Shopify for permission to read and write products. It does not ask for orders and it does not ask for customers, so it cannot see either — not your sales, not your customers' names, not their addresses.
This is checkable rather than a promise: Shopify shows you the exact permission list before you install.
What happens if I uninstall?
We stop writing immediately, and our copy of which of your products we'd matched is deleted.
What we already wrote onto your products stays on them — the pressing details, the tags, any cover art we added. That is deliberate: uninstalling an app should not blank four hundred product pages. If you want it gone, it's ordinary product content and you can remove it in Shopify. Once you've uninstalled, we no longer have permission to remove it for you.
