Biography
Michael Trent Reznor (born May 17, 1965) is an American musician. Reznor is the founder and main creative force behind the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. He is also the only official member of the band, as he composes and plays all the instruments himself; however, different producers, engineers and musicians are assembled to assist him in writing and performing new material, and a backing band accompanies him on live shows. Reznor writes all of the lyrics himself and is in sole control of the group.
The Arc of Trent Reznor
The pivots — what forced Trent Reznor to reinvent.
The Right Track Toilet Sweep
Working as a janitor in Cleveland allowed Reznor to hijack empty studio time to build Nine Inch Nails alone. He traded manual labor for access to an E-mu Emax sampler and a Prophet VS synth. These overnight sessions yielded the demos that became Pretty Hate Machine. You hear the limitations in the clean, rigid programming of those early tracks, which stood out in an era dominated by hair metal and live drum kits.
The Nothing Records Compound
Moving operations to the New Orleans funeral home turned studio took Reznor into a deep, drug-fueled isolation. He brought in producer Alan Moulder and programmer Atticus Ross to shape a wall-of-noise sound that culminated in The Fragile. The sessions were chaotic, over-budget, and plagued by Reznor's severe block. The resulting record is a masterpiece of textures, utilizing acoustic guitars and cellos drowned in digital static.
The Fincher Partnership
The pivot to instrumental scoring started when David Fincher asked Reznor to soundtrack The Social Network. Reznor partnered with Atticus Ross, abandoning the traditional rock format entirely for modular synths and minimal piano arrangements. They recorded the score in home studios with a focus on cold, atmospheric tension. This move won them an Oscar and redefined how modern Hollywood thrillers sound.
Influences
- Gary Numan — Reznor has repeatedly stated that Numan's album The Pleasure Principle was the blueprint for Nine Inch Nails. You hear this influence directly in the synth melody on 'Down In It' which lifts its rhythmic phrasing from Numan's work. The two eventually shared the stage in 2009 to perform Numan's 'Metal' live.
- Ministry — Reznor toured as a touring member of Al Jourgensen's side project Revolting Cocks in 1990 and played on the Pigface album. The aggressive, metal-guitar-meets-sampler assault of Ministry's The Land of Rape and Honey became the primary sonic reference for the broken aggression on Broken. It showed Reznor how to make synthesizers sound violent.
- David Bowie — Bowie's Low was the direct inspiration for the second half of The Downward Spiral. Reznor studied Bowie's use of instrumental, ambient spaces to convey depression. The two toured together on the Outside tour in 1995, sharing the stage for a collaborative set every night.
- Coil — Reznor signed the UK industrial pioneers to Nothing Records and had them remix several tracks on Fixed and Further Down the Spiral. Their use of dark, esoteric sound design heavily influenced the uneasy atmosphere of 'Closer'. You can hear Coil's DNA in the tense, whispering vocal production of the mid-nineties NIN catalog.
- Pink Floyd — Reznor pointed to The Wall as the conceptual framework for his double-album The Fragile. The track 'The Fragile' uses the same repeating melodic motifs and thematic structures of isolation that Roger Waters built in 1979. It is the ultimate source for Reznor's love of the grand, tragic concept record.
