Biography

American jazz drummer and kazoo player (June 27, 1897 New Orleans, Louisiana – October 30, 1969 Forest Hills, New York)
Antonio Sbarbaro, known professionally as Tony Sbarbaro or Tony Spargo, began drumming professionally at age fourteen as part of New Orleans' Frayle Brothers Band. Later, while working in an office by day, he played in Ernest Giardina’s band and with the Brunies brothers at the Tango Palace. In June 1916, he joined friends from New Orleans, Larry Shields, Eddie Edwards, and Nick LaRocca, to form the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in Chicago. Sbarbaro remained the drummer of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band for over 50 years, taking over the band's leadership in 1925.
