German multi-instrumentalist and composer mainly of film scores, born October 30, 1950 in Munich.
In the mid 1960's, he was organist of the original lineup of Munich based Beat Band. He was still in the band, when they renamed it to Subject ESQ. around 1968 and switched from organ to saxophone and flute. Under the name Subject Esq., they recorded their first album in 1972, when they already switched to Psychedelic and Jazz Rock. In 1973, they again renamed to Sahara and Hofmann stayed until the end of the band in late 1977.
Already in the mid 1970's, he studied at the and made his degree in 1976, amongst other works, he made a documentary about the band at that time. Later, he became producer and songwriter (often worked with Dario Farina and Cristiano Minellono). In the 1990's, he became a songwriter for film scores.
In 2006, he was part of the Sahara reunion and stayed until they finally broke up in 2019.
