American trumpeter, flugel hornist, vocalist, percussionist and composer, born in Frederick, Maryland. Known for co-founding The Art Ensemble Of Chicago.
He met his future wife Fontella Bass in an R&B band after military service. He worked in St. Louis and later moved to Chicago in 1966, where, together with Roscoe Mitchell, formed the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
He died of liver cancer in 1999 at his house in Brooklyn, New York, which he shared with his second wife Deborah for 20 years
Brother of Byron Bowie and Joseph Bowie (of Defunkt).
