American singer and songwriter and politician (Governor of the state of Louisiana, USA).
Born 11 September 1899 near Beech Springs, Louisiana.
Died 5 November 2000 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Married to singer.
Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1972), Gospel Music Hall of Fame (1994), Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1971) and the Shreveport Walk of Stars (2002). Known as "The Singing Governor", he was a successful country & western and gospel singer as well as a politician, serving two terms as Louisiana governor (1944-1948 and 1960-1964).
Perhaps most famous for "You Are My Sunshine" of which the Library of Congress inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2012. Do not credit Jimmy Davis composer of "Lover Man" for this song.
