His signature falsetto was the lead of his siblings' group DeBarge.
After his massive hit "Who's Johnny" he was encouraged by Berry Gordy to pursue his solo career.

He collaborated with Tone Loc, Quincy Jones, Fourplay, Babyface and DJ Quik.
