December 3, 1909 – October 16, 1987. American musician, composer and lyricist.
Classically trained, Dana Suesse (pronounced "Sweese") sought to combine her Classical background with the modern styles of Jazz and Popular music. She was sometimes referred to as "The Girl Gershwin" and that is probably not a bad comparison.
She was mainly a music composer, but also did some lyric writing and was a competent piano performer. Mainly active 1930s to 1950s.
Her successful Popular-style tunes include: 'The Night Is Young And You're So Beautiful' (over 20 recordings made, including Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore with Axel Stordahl Orchestra) ), 'Blue Moonlight' (recorded with Suesse on piano with Paul Whiteman's Orch.), 'A Table In A Corner' (incl. versions by Kitty Kallen with Jack Teagarden Orch., and Helen Forrest with Artie Shaw Orch.), 'My Silent Love' (Connie Boswell with Harry Sosnik Orch.), 'Ho-Hum!' (Bing Crosby and Loyce Whiteman with Gus Arnheim Orch.), 'Whistling In The Dark', 'This Changing World', 'Have You Forgotten?' (Ruth Etting), 'Missouri Misery' (Dorsey Brothers) and the famous 'You Oughta Be In Pictures'.
She also wrote some additional music for several Broadway musicals such as 'Moon About Town' for 'Ziegfeld Follies of 1934', and some music for the successful musical stage production of 'The Seven Year Itch' in 1952. Wrote music for the 1935 Universal film 'Sweet Surrender' (e.g. 'Twenty-Four Hours a Day'). She also had her own Carnegie Hall concert in 1974.
Her creative compositions include: 'Concerto in Three Rhythms', 'Afternoon of a Black Faun', 'Jazz Nocturne', 'Cocktail Suite', 'Three Cities Suite', 'Night Sky' (Paul Whiteman Orch.), 'American Nocturne' and 'Concerto in Rhythm' aka 'Jazz Concerto in D Major for Combo and Orchestra'.
Appeared on Oct. 27, 1946 'The Paul Whiteman Hour' (ABC) performing her own 'Interlude'.
