German musician, songwriter and guitarist, born 31 July 1951 in Hamburg, Germany, died 30 January 2002 in Hamburg, Germany.
He started in a schoolband in the late 1960's, which later became the Bluesrock band Tomorrow's Gift. He left the band after their first album and joined Novalis in 1974, but left again in 1975.
During the late 1970's, he played in various Hamburg-based bands and joined Extrabreit in 1980. In 1981, he left the band and co-founded German New Wave band Nena.
Karges is best-known as lyricist of their world hit "99 Luftballons".
