Biography
Showing the Discogs bio
German lyricist, born 6 October 1902 in Berlin, German Empire.
Together with composer Michael Jary, he formed a songwriting duo that was active from the 1930s through the 1960s. Many of their film songs helped launch the careers of stars such as Zarah Leander.
Balz was persecuted by the Nazi regime because of his homosexuality, and survived the torture in the Gestapo cellars only thanks to Jary's intervention. He died on 14 March 1988 in Bad Wiessee, Germany.
