Biography
Sylvia Massy had the band dragging a piano out into the lot behind Sound City just to smash it with sledgehammers and shoot it with shotguns for 'Disgustipated.' That’s the Tool ethos in a nutshell—absolute sonic literalism backed by a terrifying amount of patience. They crawled out of the L.A. sprawl with a grudge and a drummer who played like he had six arms, making everyone else in the grunge era look lazy by comparison. While their peers were whining about fame, these guys were obsessing over gear tension and Fibonacci sequences. Then the lawsuits hit and the gaps between records started looking like geological eras. They became the ultimate ‘wait for it’ band, demanding the kind of attention span that doesn't exist anymore. Some call the late-period stuff bloated, and they aren't entirely wrong—there are tracks on the recent records that feel like watching paint dry in 7/8 time. But when the math finally clicks and Danny Carey hits that one specific polyrhythm, you remember why every other prog-metal band sounds like a cheap knockoff. They aren't a legacy act; they’re a four-man isolation ward.

The Arc of Tool
The pivots — what forced Tool to reinvent.
The Massy Grit
Producer Sylvia Massy pushed the band into raw, high-tension territory for Undertow, focusing on the sheer physical impact of the instruments rather than studio trickery. You can hear the lack of polish in the vocal bleed and the way the bass growls like a power tool under Paul D’Amour’s aggressive pick attack. This era was defined by a lean, punishing hostility that felt grounded in the L.A. underground scene before things got heady. It’s the sound of four guys trying to punch a hole through the control room glass.
The Chancellor Shift
When Justin Chancellor replaced D'Amour during the Ænima sessions, the entire harmonic floor of the band dropped. He brought a melodic, effect-heavy approach to the bass that allowed Adam Jones to move away from constant riffing and into atmospheric textures. Working with David Bottrill, the band leaned into long-form compositions and psychedelia, moving past the aggression of the early 90s. The result was a massive expansion of space on record, where the silence became just as heavy as the distortion.
The Sacred Geometry Slump
By the time Lateralus and 10,000 Days rolled around, the band had become obsessed with the math of the thing, often at the expense of the hook. The production became cleaner, almost clinical, as they tracked obsessively to capture every nuanced cymbal swell and vocal layer. These sessions were notorious for their length and the band's refusal to compromise on even the smallest structural detail. It turned the music into a high-IQ puzzle that took a decade for the fanbase to fully solve while the band retreated further from the public eye.
Influences
- King Crimson — Adam Jones has explicitly cited the Discipline-era interlocking guitars as the blueprint for Tool's rhythmic complexity. You hear it in the way the guitar and bass play separate patterns that only converge every few bars. It’s the foundation of their entire 'prog' identity.
- Melvins — The band toured with Buzz Osborne early on and Maynard has gone on record saying they were a primary inspiration for the slow-motion sludge found on Undertow. The heavy, dragging tempo of a track like 'Flood' is a direct descendant of the Melvins' Pacific Northwest crawl. Without King Buzzo, Tool probably would have stayed a fast punk band.
- Joni Mitchell — Maynard James Keenan frequently points to Mitchell as his primary influence for phrasing and emotional vulnerability. You hear it in the unexpected melodic leaps and the way he uses his voice as a woodwind instrument rather than a rock shout. It's the reason his vocals don't sound like every other metal frontman's bark.
- Swans — The punishing, repetitive industrial weight of early Swans is all over the darker corners of the Opiate EP. Tool took Michael Gira’s idea of using volume and repetition as a form of physical assault and refined it for the radio. The grueling length of their later tracks is a direct nod to the Swans' philosophy of endurance.
- Rush — Danny Carey has spoken extensively about Neil Peart being the reason he picked up the sticks, specifically regarding the use of electronics and percussion color. You hear it in the meticulously composed drum solos and the way Carey treats his kit like an orchestra. It's the high-concept precision that keeps the band from descending into total chaos.
