Biography
Norah Jones, born on March 30, 1979 in New York City, is one of the most popular contemporary jazz and jazz-influenced singers of our time. She was a member of Wax Poetic before her debut album Come Away with Me. She can still be heard singing with them on two tracks of their release, NuBlu Sessions. Her debut album Come Away with Me was released in 2002 and sold 26 million copies worldwide. It won 5 Grammy Awards in 2003. This album was produced by Arif Mardin.
The Arc of Norah Jones
The pivots — what forced Norah Jones to reinvent.
The Blue Note Phenomenon
Blue Note president Bruce Lundvall signed her off a three-track demo, pairing her with legendary producer Arif Mardin to cut Come Away With Me and Feels Like Home. Mardin pushed the rhythm section back and kept the vocals completely dry, letting Alexander's upright bass and Harris's acoustic guitar frame her piano. The result was massive, shifting millions of units and cleaning out the Grammy awards. It accidentally made her the face of upscale adult contemporary, a corner she spent the rest of her career fighting her way out of.
The Distortion and Danger Mouse Turn
After taking full songwriting control on 2007's Not Too Late, she completely blew up her sonic palette by hiring Jacquire King for The Fall and then Danger Mouse for 2012's Little Broken Hearts. Out went the polite acoustic brushes; in came jagged electric guitars, synth bass, and drum loops built around a brutal real-life breakup. She swapped the baby grand for a gritty Fender Rhodes and tracked heavily treated vocals through vintage gear at Danger Mouse's Los Angeles studio. It alienated the dinner-party crowd and gave her the best critical credibility she'd seen in a decade.
The Loose-End Collaborator
Starting around 2016's Day Breaks and solidifying with the Begin Again sessions, she abandoned the traditional album cycle to work in short, spontaneous studio bursts with whoever was in town. She brought in jazz royalty like Wayne Shorter and Brian Blade, tracked one-off singles with Jeff Tweedy, and cut an entire Everly Brothers tribute LP with Billie Joe Armstrong. Teaming up with producer Leon Michels for 2024's Visions locked in this late-career vibe: raw, soulful, heavy on the groove, and completely unbothered by commercial expectations.
Influences
- Billie Holiday — Jones spent her college years at the University of North Texas dissecting Holiday's vocal phrasing, openly citing Lady Day as her primary vocal north star. You hear it in how she drags behind the beat and refuses to oversell a high note, relying on breath and micro-timing instead of vocal gymnastics.
- Willie Nelson — Nelson's phrasing and stripped-back Texas songcraft shaped Jones long before they cut the live duet of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' and shared stages across two decades. Her cover of 'Don't Get Freaked Out' with The Little Willies directly channels Willie's behind-the-beat acoustic swing.
- Aretha Franklin — Franklin was a primary early touchstone for Jones's approach to the piano, specifically how Aretha anchored gospel and blues grooves from the keyboard while singing lead. You hear that left-hand gospel weight driving mid-tempo cuts like 'Thinking About You'.
- Hank Williams — Jones cut 'Cold, Cold Heart' on her debut and has consistently returned to the Williams songbook throughout her entire live career. That stripped-down, three-chord country fatalism is the direct foundation for her mid-2000s songwriting.
- Nina Simone — Simone's total disregard for genre boundaries—moving effortlessly from classical counterpoint to gutbucket blues and folk—gave Jones the blueprint for refusing to stay in the standard jazz lane. The moody, low-register piano vamps on tracks like 'Burn' owe everything to Simone's modal playing.
