Biography

Crystal Fairy, briefly known as Red Alpha Royale, was a short-lived American alt-rock/stoner supergroup, formed in 2016 by two Melvins members, guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover, vocalist Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta. After releasing two 7" singles and a self-titled CD/LP album in 2017, the project was abandoned shortly after. Melvins had already collaborated with Teri Gender Bender on several occasions in 2015; she opened for the band on a few dates, and occasionally joined as a guest vocalist to sing covers on Fascists Eat Donuts" by Pop-O-Pies and Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl." Meanwhile, Teri's band, Le Butcherettes, was signed to Omar's label, Rodriguez Lopez Productions, and they played in Bosnian Rainbows (2013) and Kimono Kult (2014) together. In September 2015, Melvins recorded the "Rebel Girl" cover with Teri Gender Bender, released as a single-sided 7" lathe cut by Joyful Noise Recordings. Soon after, they started a new band, Red Alpha Royale, with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez joining on bass (which he used to play in De Facto).
In October 2016, the Red Alpha Royale's debut Necklace Of Divorce (US 2016) (opens in a new tab) 7" single came out on Amphetamine Reptile Records. The band soon renamed to "Crystal Fairy," ad-libbed by Teri during one of the recording sessions, when she exclaimed, "My name is Crystal Fairy." Allegedly, the title was inspired by Sebastian Silva's 2013 independent comedy, Crystal Fairy y el Cáctus Mágico. (The inaugural seven-inch was reprinted with a revised artwork.) In February 2017, Crystal Fairy released the eponymous studio album on Ipecac Recordings, featuring six more songs and the cover of "Possession" by Tales Of Terror. Shortly after, however, Crystal Fairy abruptly cancelled the promised tour and went defunct. According to Dale Crover's October 2018 interview with a Sight/Sound/Rhythm music blog, such a rapid cancellation became a "tough loss" for him and Buzz; the artist further claimed Crystal Fairy was "one of [his] favourite things" and both were beyond enthusiastic and fully committed, even planning to put Melvins on hold to focus entirely on what seemingly was a "really special" collaboration.
