Biography
AFI (A Fire Inside) is an American punk rock band from Ukiah, California, formed in 1991. The band's lineup stabilized in 1998 with lead vocalist Davey Havok, drummer and backing vocalist Adam Carson, bassist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Hunter Burgan, and guitarist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Jade Puget. Havok and Carson are the sole remaining original members. Originally a hardcore punk band, they have since delved into many genres.
The Arc of AFI
The pivots — what forced AFI to reinvent.
The East Bay Skate Punk Years
Between 1995 and 1997, the band lived in the shadow of the Gilman Street scene, playing hyper-fast punk with snotty attitude. Original guitarist Markus Stopholese and bassist Geoff Kresge kept the sound rooted in traditional, breakneck skate-core. You can hear the raw, unrefined energy on Very Proud of Ya, which was basically a love letter to the local scene's speed limits. It was loud and fast, but they were running out of room to grow within those strict genre boundaries.
The Dark Core Metamorphosis
The arrival of guitarist Jade Puget and bassist Hunter Burgan for 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset changed the band's DNA forever. Puget brought heavy, metallic riffs and complex arrangements that instantly pushed them toward dark, melodic hardcore. Havok responded by ditching the bratty shout for a dramatic, theatrical vocal delivery. The transition solidified on All Hallow’s E.P. and The Art of Drowning, transforming them from standard-issue punkers into goth-punk visionaries.
The Major Label Gothic Stadium Peak
Signing to DreamWorks for 2003's Sing the Sorrow, the band teamed up with production heavyweights Butch Vig and Jerry Finn. Instead of stripping away their dark edge for radio, the production team amplified it with massive layers of synths, programming, and huge choral arrangements. This era turned the underground goth-punk act into a platinum-selling force. The follow-up, DECEMBERUNDERGROUND, pushed even harder into cold synth-pop territory, proving they could dominate the charts without losing their grim aesthetic.
The Post-Goth Rock Strip Down
After the electronic excess of their mid-2000s peak, the band stripped away the dense layers of synth and makeup for 2009's Crash Love. Recorded with producer David Kahne, the album focused on classic, guitar-driven alternative rock with a heavy nod to British post-punk and new wave. It alienated the fans who wanted endless screaming, but showcased Puget's clean, intricate guitar work. It marked their transition into a mature, legacy rock band that refused to keep repeating the same formula.
Influences
- The Misfits — AFI covered 'Halloween' on the All Hallow's E.P. and Davey Havok has constantly cited Glenn Danzig as his primary vocal blueprint. You hear it in the dark, melodic horror-punk lyricism and those massive, chest-voiced 'woah-oh' singalong choruses that became AFI's signature.
- Joy Division — The band covered 'The Eternal' and frequently cite the band as the source of their dark, bass-driven post-punk elements. You hear this influence directly in Hunter Burgan’s prominent, melodic basslines that carry the melody during Puget's atmospheric guitar parts.
- The Cure — AFI paid direct tribute by covering 'Just Like Heaven' and Jade Puget has frequently pointed to Robert Smith's atmospheric, chorus-heavy guitar work as a major influence. The lush, melancholic guitar textures and synth backing on DECEMBERUNDERGROUND are straight out of the Disintegration playbook.
- Minor Threat — Before the goth phase, AFI was a straight-up hardcore punk band mentored by local legends like Swingin' Utters, and they covered Minor Threat's 'No Reason' on their early EP. The raw, blistering speed and shout-along aggression on Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes are a direct line from Ian MacKaye's Washington D.C. hardcore template.
- The Sisters of Mercy — Davey Havok has repeatedly championed Andrew Eldritch's theatrical, deep baritone delivery and bleak lyrical themes. This goth-rock DNA is all over the dramatic vocal delivery and dark, driving electronic tempos of the band's later albums like Burials and Bodies.
