True to their name, most of the songs on the Minutemen's second album, <i>What Makes a Man Start Fires?</i>, last only a minute and change, but that's all the time that start-stopping broadsides like "Mutiny In Jonestown" need to make their point. The San Pedro punk trio were masters at packing as many ideas as possible into their music while keeping it relentlessly straightforward, and it’s that sense of focus that makes rubbery tracks like "One Chapter In the Book" hit with such economical force.

The basic tracks for this album were recorded in the early AM hours of July 3, 1982 at Music Lab studios (studio B) in Hollywood, CA.
Guitar and vocal overdubs were done on two separate days in August, 1982 and then_spot did a final mix shortly after that at Total Access Studio, Redondo Beach, CA
Catalog number "SST-014" on label and back cover, "SST014" on spine
Track B7 is spelled "LIFE AS A REHERSAL" on the label, "LIFE AS A REHEARSAL" on back cover lyrics.
Runouts are etched, except for "kdisc" which is stamped.
