About
Recorded all around the world—Australia! St. Paul! Indonesia! Chicago! Italy! Los Angeles!—during different concerts and at an array of venues over the years, Bon Iver invigorates nine of the band’s cuts plus one previously recorded cover on VOLUMES: ONE (SELECTIONS FROM MUSIC CONCERTS 2019-2023 BON IVER 6 PIECE BAND) for their first-ever non-studio album. Stunningly crisp and precise, VOLUMES: ONE forms to its settings with a cavernous sheen that highlights Vernon’s shimmering falsetto (and his occasional resonant baritone) as well as the elegant, electronic production vital to the Bon Iver aura. Often lively (the crackling “WΣ”), at times serene (“Sh’DIAH boardmix”), the set is expertly embellished from its source material. Hoping to emulate Bob Dylan’s long-running Bootleg Series unearthing archival releases—fun fact: The Red Hayes and Jack Rhodes-penned “A Satisfied Mind” appears on Volume 11 of Dylan’s series and here as a vocally synthesized and enhanced version—Vernon helms a striking showcase fit for a sequel...or several.
