Volume 1 - Absa Gueye by Etoile De Dakar Featuring Youssou N'Dour

Volume 1 - Absa Gueye is a Global & Regional album by Etoile De Dakar Featuring Youssou N'Dour, originally released in 1993. On Gatefold: 3 pressings tracked.

About

Long before he was serving as special advisor to the president of Senegal, Afropop icon Youssou N’Dour was helping craft the supple, rhythmic Senegalese pop style called mbalax. Absa Gueye, Vol. 1 collects early recordings from his band, Étoile de Dakar, which blended Latin grooves, talking drums, horn riffs, and psych guitars into their own mellifluous sound. They hit the sweet spot on “Jalo,” a tropical lullaby guided by N’Dour’s powerful vocals, but they also cut loose on breezier ditties like the Spanish-language “Tu Veras.”

Notes from the original pressing. Later editions may differ.

This first volume includes one of Youssou's earliest successes, an interpretation of Jalo in praise of an ancient king, which was recorded several times under different circumstances. Absa Gueye was one of his first original compositions in praise of a patron, while "Tu Veras", "Esta China" and "El Hombre Misterioso Soy" are characteristic examples of the Latin sounds popular in the early years of Senegalese dance music.
