About

“Virtual XI” (pronounced “Virtual Eleven”) is the eleventh studio album by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on 23 March 1998. It is the second and final album to feature Blaze Bayley as the band’s lead vocalist, and also the last recorded as a five-piece lineup before the return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith. Janick Ger, who had previously replaced Smith, remained in the band after their return. The album’s title was influenced by two external themes: the release of the band’s computer game “Ed Hunter” and the 1998 FIFA World Cup. According to bassist Steve Harri, the band aimed to incorporate shared interests between themselves and their audience, particularly football and gaming. Promotional activity included football matches across Europe involving musicians and professional footballer. Artwork for the album booklet was largely derived from “Ed Hunter”, while the cover was designed by Melvyn Grant. It was originally intended to reflect virtual reality themes but was later modified to include football imagery, aligning it with the World Cup concept. “Virtual XI” also introduced a modified version of the band’s logo, with the extended lettering on the “R”, “M”, and “N” removed. This version of the logo remained in use on subsequent releases until 2010, after which the original design was reinstated for later studio album. During this period, Steve Harris also contributed keyboard parts on the album, whereas these had previously been performed by other personnel. The supporting tour experienced cancellations in the United States due to Blaze Bayley’s vocal issue, although these were officially attributed to an allergic reaction. Musically and lyrically, “Virtual XI” continues Iron Maiden’s narrative and thematic style. The single “Futureal” explores themes of virtual reality and confinement, while “The Angel and the Gambler” presents a narrative involving moral opposition between two symbolic character. Other tracks include “Lightning Strikes Twice”, which emphasizes resilience and optimism, and “The Clansman”, inspired by the film “Braveheart” and themes of cultural identity and resistance. “When Two Worlds Collide” reflects on personal and professional transition, while “The Educated Fool” addresses aging and perceived wisdom. “Don’t Look to the Eyes of a Stranger” draws on parental fears regarding unknown threat, and “Como Estais Amigos” is a tribute related to the Falklands War. Following Bruce Dickinson’s return to the band, songs from “Virtual XI” such as “Futureal” and “The Clansman” remained part of live performances for several year, with official live recordings released later. Several compositions written during the album’s sessions were later reworked for the follow-up album “Brave New World”. .
