Trial by Fire is the band Journey's comeback album and their tenth studio album to date. It was released in 1996, ten years after their last album, Raised On Radio. It featured the line-up from the albums Escape and Frontiers, their most successful albums. It reached the number 3 spot on the Billboard 200. Its single "When You Love a Woman" reached the number 12 spot on the Hot 100 and the number 1 spot on the Adult Contemporary charts. Other singles released were "Message of Love" and "If He Should Break Your Heart." This was also the last album to feature lead singer, Steve Perry.

Journey's eleventh album, released in October of 1996, Journey's first album in ten years as well as the last album to feature frontman Steve Perry to date. Trial By Fire served as a reunion of the band's line-up during their most successful period of 1981-1983, and style-wise presents slightly less hook-heavy numbers and more abstract, spiritual lyrics. Trial By Fire was very successful on release, reaching #3 on the Billboard charts, and spawning a Top 20 single (When You Love A Woman), which also was a #1 hit on the Billboard AC chart. "Message Of Love", "Can't Tame The Lion (US 1996) (opens in a new tab)" and "If He Should Break Your Heart" were released as singles as well, but missed the Billboard Top 100, although "Message Of Love" and "Can't Tame The Lion" reached #18 and #33 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart respectively, and "If He Should Break Your Heart" reached #21 on the Billboard AC Chart and was a Top 20 in Canada. A music video was produced for "When You Love A Woman".
Trial By Fire contains a "hidden" track, "Baby I'm Leaving You": furthermore, the Japanese pressing of the album contained a bonus track, "I Can See It In Your Eyes". The album was re-released in 2006 with "I Can See It In Your Eyes" included in all pressings and "Baby I'm Leaving You" added to the track listing.
Steve Perry would retire from the band after a dispute about touring for the album while Perry was recovering from an operation, and would be replaced by Steve Augeri.
