From the opening rhythmic synth-and-drum pulse of “Art of Almost,” Wilco establishes <i>The Whole Love</i> as a journey through the nuances of art pop. The alarming lyrics of “I Might” get a jittery, thumping accompaniment that's slightly softened by glockenspiel twinkles; “Rising Red Lung” and the gently symphonic “Black Moon” turn Tweedy’s folk toward simple but lush atmospheres. And the quiet behemoth “One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley’s Boyfriend)” draws its conclusion via gentle indie-pop flourishes.
