"The Very Best of Elton John" is a greatest hits compilation album by British musician Elton John, released by The Rocket Record Company in October 1990. It was John's first career-retrospective compilation album and his fourth official greatest hits album. It was released in the United Kingdom, throughout Europe, Japan and Australia, among other countries, but not in the United States, where the box set "To Be Continued..." was released the following month instead. The compilation covers material from John's second album, "Elton John" (1970), through "Sleeping with the Past" (1989). Following the success of the double A-sided single "Sacrifice"/"Healing Hands", which became a hit in the United Kingdom and was the country's third best-selling single of 1990, the album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. It spent two weeks at number one and nine weeks at number two, where it was kept from the top position by Madonna's "The Immaculate Collection". The compilation spent a total of 145 weeks in the UK Albums Chart's top 200, including 11 re-entries. It was certified 9x Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 March 1995. The album contains 28 hit singles as well as the new songs "Easier to Walk Away" and "You Gotta Love Someone", both of which subsequently charted between 1990 and 1991. A music video compilation was also released in conjunction with the album, initially on LaserDisc and VHS and later reissued on DVD.
