On <i>The Village Green Preservation Society</i>, Ray Davies writes about his nostalgia for a picture-perfect England during an era of social upheaval dominated by psychedelia and ever-louder hard rock. It sounded quaint then, and its idiosyncrasies still charm today. Davies’ slightly mad characters amuse, but it’s the album’s primal production that connects on the simple rock of “Picture Book,” the modest blues of “Last of the Steam Powered Trains,” and the sweet sentimentality of “All of My Friends Were There.”
