This album consists of recordings made by Jethro Tull in 1972 at the famous Chateau d'Hérouville (opens in a new tab) in France. The recordings were abandoned at an advanced stage for various reasons and shelved. Themes and songs were later recycled in different form on the albums A Passion Play (1973) and War Child (1974), however the original recordings remained in the vaults until 1988 when a few extracts were released on the anniversary boxset 20 Years Of Jethro Tull (opens in a new tab): they were nicknamed 'The Chateau D'Isaster Tapes'. In 1993 the full recordings from Hérouville were released on the first disc of another archive collection, Nightcap: The Unreleased Masters 1973-1991. For these two releases, the original 1972 recordings were mixed and vocal and flute overdubs were added by Ian Anderson.
In 2014, the Hérouville sessions were released once again, this time without overdubs, as a bonus for the 40th anniversary release A Passion Play (An Extended Performance) (Europe 2014) (opens in a new tab).
This 2024 version, again without overdubs, is the first time these recordings have been released on LP and as a stand-alone album.
