<i>Sweet Baby James</i> is the sacred text of the singer/songwriter movement. With the poetic, autumnal “Fire and Rain,” the lullaby-like title track, and the bucolic “Country Road,” James Taylor made tender folk-pop balladry the sound of the ‘70s. His gentle croon and pretty fingerpicking make this the ultimate rainy-day chill-out album, but tongue-in-cheek blues tunes like “Steamroller” and “Oh Baby, Don’t You Loose Your Lip on Me” show that amid all that introspection there’s a sharp sense of humor as well.

Many US pressings indicate in the notes that "Original US release. Track A6 is misspelled as "Oh, Susanna" on record, but spelled correctly as "Oh, Susannah" on back picture sleeve." This error actually remains well into 1980s reissues. Through 1978 the label layout remains essentially the same.
Original pressing are pressed on 1968-70 W7 labels with covers that do not include the notation: "Contains FIRE AND RAIN and COUNTRY ROAD" This wording was added ca. 1971. Early represses are on 1970-73 green labels with red/blue WB logo.
