About

Grown-out hair, tattoos, and an appetite for destructive hedonism recast Dave Gahan as snake-hipped rock deity in time for the release of Depeche Mode’s eighth album, and the rumbling bass and squalling guitars of “Walking in My Shoes” gave him an anthem to go with his new image. There’s also pronounced evangelical passion in a set of songs that obsess over sin, redemption, and judgement—from “Condemnation”’s goth-gospel to the choral electronica of “Judas”.
