Sloop John B was arranged by Brian Wilson and is an interpretation of a Bahamian folk song first recorded in 1935 by for Alan Lomax' series under the title Hustle Up The John B. Sail. It was copyrighted by Carl Sandburg and Lee Hays in 1950, taking advantage of the loopholes in the law as was customary at the time. The song was covered in 1950 by The Weavers, in 1958 by The Kingston Trio, in 1959 by Johnny Cash, and in 1960 by Lonnie Donegan also in 1962 by Arthur Lyman Group as (The Sloop) John B..
