Released in 1986. Produced by Todd Rundgren. In interviews, Andy Partridge has often said that the Rundgren was difficult to work with and that he disagreed with Rundgren's choices during the recording -- but upon reflection is very happy with the way the album turned out. This album has a very "Beatlesque" feel to it. Often cited as XTC's best album. Initially released with "Mermaid Smiled" in the UK, but then new pressings had "Dear God" added after it became a minor hit on alternative charts Despite all that in November 22, 2010 Ape Records re-issued Skylarking on remastered 45RPM.

"Skylarking" is XTC's ninth studio album, released on 27 October 1986. Original vinyl releases do not feature the song "Dear God", which was issued as the B-side of lead single "Grass". When the song became a college radio hit in the US, Geffen Records had the album recalled and reissued with the track included instead of "Mermaid Smiled". "Dear God" was released as a single the following year. The US CD release was in July 1987 so all versions contain "Dear God" instead of "Mermaid Smiled". Later reissues in different territories usually contain both songs.
