About
Though many grander and more inclusive Simon & Garfunkel greatest-hits albums have been issued since this album’s 1972 appearance, Simon & Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits remains a sentimental favorite for the obvious care that went into its sequencing and for its inclusion of four previously unreleased live tracks. In 1972, there were no live albums available from the duo, so the addition of concert versions of “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,” “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” “Homeward Bound," and “Kathy’s Song” were a major deal. Besides, the remaining songs on this set proved to be timeless staples that transcend their genre and era.

Released on June 14, 1972, two years after the duo had disbanded. It's a mix of original studio recordings and four previously unreleased live recordings.
The record's minimalist packaging does not specifically date the latter; however, the live versions of "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" and "Kathy's Song" included on "Greatest Hits" were also included on the 2008 album "Live 1969." The liner notes to "Live 1969" state that these two songs were both recorded at a November 1969 concert in St. Louis, Missouri. According to the liner notes from Collected Works, however, the version of "Kathy's Song" was taken from a 1968 concert in Vermont.
*"The 59th St Bridge Song" and "Homeward Bound" are also live versions.
"Cecilia" is a mono mix, perhaps the single mix, until the vocal outro, where it crossfades to stereo.
"America" and "Bookends" appear for the first time with dry, uncrossfaded openings. "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" crossfades from the prior live cut's applause.
