About

Released just two weeks after The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Roxy Music’s eponymous debut heralded the ascent of a certain form of high-octane yet highly artistic form of rock 'n' roll. Both acts had heavy guitars and otherworldly costuming, but where David Bowie's rock appealed to Led Zeppelin's audiences, Roxy was more eccentric. Between Bryan Ferry’s quavering vocals and Andy MacKay’s honking saxophones, there's something in these songs that's not just conceptually alien but truly, unnervingly peculiar. At the same time, “Re-Make/Re-Model” and “Virginia Plain” are two of the most lovable dance tunes of the early '70s. Roxy could be cacophonous and elegant at the same time, but it could also be downright dashing, as on the swaying ballads “2HB” and “Would You Believe?” Thanks to Brian Eno, the music is deeply textured in a way that stands out among the dry production tactics of the early '70s. Roxy was full of neon and glitter, but unlike other glam bands, it showed remarkable maturity and wisdom underneath the music's boisterousness.

Debut studio album released 1972.
The album was dedicated to Susie, a drummer who auditioned for Roxy Music in the early days. The cover features model, one of the rare Roxy models who didn't date Bryan Ferry.
The album has been released in different packages over the years. The album's original cover, as issued in the UK, June 1972 by Island Records, featured a gatefold sleeve picturing the band in stage attire, and did not include "Virginia Plain". The album's original U.S. release, in late 1972 on Warner Bros. Records' Reprise subsidiary, included "Virginia Plain," which had been issued as a single in the UK prior to the album's U.S. release. The original U.S. release also featured a gatefold sleeve, but replaced Simpson's photo with that of Rik Kenton, who played bass on "Virginia Plain" following Simpson's departure from the group.
U.S. distribution of Roxy Music was transferred from Reprise to their affiliated company Atco Records in 1976, and back to Reprise in the mid-1980s. LP editions of the album pressed in these time frames were without the gatefold sleeve and band photographs, instead providing liner notes on the rear album cover.
In most later repressings of the album, including CD versions, the song "Virginia Plain" has been included.
