About
Purpendicular is the fifteenth studio album by Deep Purple. It was recorded in 1995 and 1996 and released in February (UK) and April (US) 1996. In November 1993, in the midst of a tour supporting their previous studio album, The Battle Rages On, Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple for the second time in the band's history (previously in 1975), ending the second reunion period of the classic Mark II line-up. Joe Satriani joined temporarily to fill-in for Blackmore on the remainder of the tour but was unable to join the band full time. Thu, Mark VI lasted for only a couple of month. In 1994, the band found a permanent member in American guitar player, Steve Morse, known from Kansas and his own band, Dixie Dreg. With him aboard, Deep Purple recorded Purpendicular, which is a more experimental album than their previous releases with Blackmore. Morse presents many different techniques of playing the instrument, making the album more varied in sound and arrangement. Though many fans claimed that Morse's style of playing was too modern for Deep Purple, the album was received positively. The most popular track on Purpendicular is undoubtedly "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming". It almost instantly became a fan favourite and a real Deep Purple classic of the 90's and is still played by the band on almost all tour. Purpendicular was the first of two albums recorded by Deep Purple Mark VII, which featured: Ian Gillan Steve Morse Roger Glover Jon Lord .
