Over

Over is the sixth studio album by the English singer and songwriter Peter Hammill, recorded between 27 June - 4 July 1976 at Foel Studio, except "This Side Of The Looking Glass" which was recorded between 5-14 July 1976 at Rockfield Studios. The official release by Charisma Records was announced for March 11th, 1977 but several sources say it was likely delayed to April 1977.
The album was originally to be called "Over My Shoulder" with a different cover shot in which Hammill was caught looking back over his shoulder with a very mixed expression. It was changed at the last minute, and while this sketch for the cover is lost, the rejected title was still already printed on disc labels and used for the first French pressing (opens in a new tab) and the Japanese issue (opens in a new tab) only. All other releases show the final title "Over" on disc (and cover of course)..
The album details the break-up of a long-term relationship with a woman known as Alice. It was recorded during a period of line-up change for Hammill's band Van der Graaf Generator, and features past, present and future VDDG members: drummer Guy Evans, future recruit Graham Smith (formerly of String Driven Thing) on violin, and the return of the band's bass player from 1969 to 1970, Nic Potter.
