Grace Jones was already a stalwart of the Studio 54 scene when she recorded her transcendent fifth album. Propelled by Jamaica’s premier rhythm section, Sly & Robbie, <i>Nightclubbing</i> resets the boundaries of pop by splicing New Wave, disco, and reggae with Jones’s icy, provocative poise. Whether riding “Pull Up to the Bumper”’s elastic groove with thinly disguised salaciousness or reimagining Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing” as stalking dub, she forges a heady, singular sound to match her otherworldly stage presence.
