About
Interstellar Space is a free jazz studio album by American saxophonist John Coltrane, featuring drummer Rashied Ali. It was recorded on February 22, 1967 – just months before Coltrane’s death – and later released in September 1974 by Impulse! Records (ASD-9277). The album consists of a duet suite in four parts – ‘Mars’, ‘Venus’, ‘Jupiter’, and ‘Saturn’ – performed solely by Coltrane and Ali. The session took place at Van Gelder Studio one week after the recordings that produced Stellar Regions (‘Offering’ also featured on the album Expression) and shortly before further sessions that yielded material later issued on Expression. Additional pieces from the same date, ‘Leo’ and ‘Jupiter Variation’, appeared on later CD reissues that compiled the full session. According to critic Ben Ratliff, the recording was largely unplanned. Ali arrived at the studio expecting a full group session, but found only Coltrane present. The two musicians proceeded to record the material in a single, spontaneous take. Personnel: .
