Originally released in 1959 on United Artists Records as a Cecil Taylor Quintet release with the titles "Hard Driving Jazz" (mono version) and "Stereo Drive" (stereo version). Reissued as a John Coltrane release in 1962/1963 with the title "Coltrane Time". CD reissues on Blue Note kept the Coltrane attribution.
It is the only known recording featuring both Taylor and Coltrane (who is credited on the album under the alias "Blue Train").
