About

Billy Joel had so many hits between 1973 and 1985 that this collection, first released on two CDs, couldn't include them all. Instead, it aimed to provide a coherent narrative of exactly what Joel accomplished during this period. It includes the concert classic "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" alongside well-known hits like "Piano Man," "Just the Way You Are," "My Life," and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me."

Joel's first greatest hits compilation, which compiles the majority of his most popular tracks up until 1983. Two new tracks were recorded for this album, "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "The Night Is Still Young", both of which became "hits" in their own rights.
Several versions of this album exist, with altered track listings. The original LP version contains the 1981 live version of "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", "New York State Of Mind" with a different saxophone solo, and single versions of five songs: "Just The Way You Are", "My Life", "Big Shot", "Pressure" and "Tell Her About It". Additionally, some issues replaced "Don't Ask Me Why" with "Honesty".
The original CD version of this album adds "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", as well as the 1981 live version of "She's Got a Way".
The remastered 1998 CD version of this album replaces the five single versions with their album versions and replaces the live version of "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" with the original 1976 album version.
Some international markets released the album in two parts, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
