About

When it comes to a band as productive and imaginative as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, applying even minor tweaks to the methodology can have macro-sized effects. Sure enough, the band’s embrace of microtonal tunings and Arabic scales opens up an array of new avenues for Melbourne’s premier freak-flag-fliers on Flying Microtonal Banana, the first of five albums they released in 2017 and their ninth overall. Even more welcome than the shades of Turkish psychedelia that color “Melting” and “Sleep Drifter” are the Master Musicians of Jajouka-inspired polyrhythms that make “Nuclear Fusion” such a trip. Meanwhile, the exhilarating “Rattlesnake” proves the band’s new enthusiasms haven’t replaced their love of velocity.
