About
Expression is a studio album by jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, recorded in early 1967 and released in late September of the same year by Impulse! Records (A-9120), shortly after his death. It was the first posthumous release of a Coltrane recording. All tracks were recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliff. The piece ‘Offering’ was taped on February 15 with Coltrane’s quartet — Alice Coltrane (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Rashied Ali (drums) — and was later included in full on Stellar Region. About a week later, Coltrane and Ali recorded duet material later issued as Interstellar Space. On March 7, the quartet recorded ‘Ogunde’ and ‘Number One’, the latter added only on later CD edition. The exact dates for the remaining tracks are uncertain. ‘Expression’ features the quartet, while ‘To be’ includes an expanded lineup with Pharoah Sanders and possibly Algie DeWitt (bata drum), with Coltrane on alto flute. Shortly before his death, Coltrane met producer Bob Thiele and proposed the album’s title.
