About
From day one, a darkness has pervaded Eels’ deceptively playful garage-folk-hop adventurism, but on End Times, Mark Everett delivers a dose of harsh truth without the honeyed chasers. Recorded in the wake of a breakup, the album captures him at his most wounded: The celestial sound effects percolating through the softly strummed ballad “In My Younger Days” can’t smooth the throat-ravaging ache in his voice, while the Lennon-like piano confessional “I Need a Mother” is a disarmingly vulnerable expression of inadequacy.
