About
Few albums start as rowdily as Deep Purple in Rock, with a guitar caterwaul that resolves into stately church organ and then sudden, screaming heavy rock (“Speed King”). That’s the level of intensity the Purps maintain throughout this startling 1970 classic. “Child in Time” is the peak of bug-eyed drama—over 10 minutes building from nothing to everything—but this is an album of giddy confidence, whether bludgeoning everyone aside in “Flight of the Rat” or swaggering weightily through “Into the Fire.”

Deep Purple In Rock is the fourth studio album by British rock band Deep Purple, recorded from October 1969 to April 1970 at the IBC Studio (opens in a new tab), De Lane Lea Studios (opens in a new tab) and Abbey Road Studios (opens in a new tab), all in London.
First issued in UK, June 5, 1970 on Harvest SHVL 777:
The original album came in an outside laminated gatefold sleeve. The inner gatefold had lyrics on the left and five black & white photos of the individual band members & credits on the right.
The main identifiers of the earliest UK copies:
- The upper rim text on labels begins with 'THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD';
- No EMI logo on labels;
- Small Ⓟ icon (left of 1970 on labels);
- Only one bold line around the EMI/Harvest logo on the front sleeve;
- Plain factory inner sleeve with 'Patent Nos. 1125555' text on the left and 'Made In Great Britain' text on the right at the bottom of the sleeve.
In Mexico the album also included "Black Night", a single recorded soon after the main album sessions.
The U.S. and Japanese releases of the album cut the intro to "Speed King" lasting just over a minute.
The main title could be spelled as "Deep Purple In Rock" according to the logo of the 1st UK Harvest Edition Deep Purple In Rock (UK 1970) (opens in a new tab), or, as many editions are referred to, "In Rock".
