On this 1955 album, Brown plays ballad and standards, showing off his warm tone on such numbers as "Portrait of Jenny," "Memories of You," "Embraceable You" and "Stardust." The string arrangements, by Neal Hefti, are seen as lush settings by some and muzak by others. Brown never really departs from the melody, so the trumpeter's tone and phrasing are the focus of this record. Clifford Brown is accompanied by his usual band-mates: pianist Richie Powell, bassist George Morrow, and drummer Max Roach. (Unfortunately, the string-players providing the accompaniment have never been listed on any releases.)
