About
Chuck Berry on Stage was released in August 1963 on Chess Records, catalogue LP 1480, marketed falsely as a live concert recording. In reality, it was a studio album enhanced by artificial crowd noise and applause dubbed over previously unissued or existing tracks. The only new material on the tracklist consisted of five previously unreleased studio songs, including "Trick or Treat" and "Still Got the Blues". Breaking the chart curse of his earlier long-playing efforts, the release found significant traction and became his first album to enter the Billboard Top LPs chart peaking at number 29. It performed even better overseas, proving a major success in the United Kingdom, where it reached Top 10 of the albums chart.
