Capitalizing on the singer's recent UK tour, the album was recorded primarily in London with the British R&B group The 5 Dimension. The tracklist featured mostly new material, though Chess still filled out the record with a few leftover, including five tracks recorded in Chicago and the instrumental "Night Beat," which dates back to a 1957 session. .
