About

Madeline Peyroux's Careless Love has the feel of an after-hours speakeasy in full swing: As Peyroux croons Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love,” you can easily imagine a smoky scene, with couples sashaying to its folk-jazz sway. Arriving eight years after her debut, the album, with its covers-heavy tracklist, is all the richer for her interim stint busking in Paris: Her striking, snare-brushed take on Elliott Smith’s “Between the Bars” could stop even the most hurried passersby dead in their tracks.
