As the follow-up to 2002’s indie-rock insta-classic <i>You Forgot It in People</i>, Broken Social Scene’s self-titled 2005 release bore the great weight of expectation from both without and within—its protracted recording process yielding murmurs of an imminent breakup. But the band valiantly fought back against the pressure by amplifying both their anthemic and abstract qualities, culminating in the heroic “It’s All Gonna Break,” a 10-minute, brass-blasted blowout that stands as the greatest manifestation of their sprawling messthetic.
