About

From its title to the declaration that “death is everywhere” within the dystopian love song “Fly on the Windscreen (Final),” Depeche Mode’s fifth album is a step further into darkness. It’s not at the expense of inventive songwriting though. “Stripped” understands the difference between epic and overdone as it builds from a chugging motorbike sample to the imposing urgency of the chorus, while Martin Gore’s vulnerability captivates when he opens his suspicious heart on the industrial melancholy of “A Question of Lust.”
