About
Yo La Tengo’s ninth album is a touching, tender tour through the relationship of its founders, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley. Blending rumpled Velvet Underground-style ballads with echoing production and jazz touches, the music rarely rises above a whisper, detailing courtship (“Our Way to Fall”), troubles (“Tears Are in Your Eyes”), and a carefree sweetness the band rarely shows elsewhere (a cover of George McCrae’s ‘70s disco-lite hit “You Can Have It All”). It’s like a <i>John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman</i> for the indie set.
