The first releases didn’t include the version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (opens in a new tab) by Herbert von Karajan (opens in a new tab) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (opens in a new tab) that was featured in film (the Decca Record Company, the owner of the recording, didn’t want to get involved with film and gave permission to use it with the condition of not being credited). Instead of this recording, the original soundtrack album included a Deutsche Grammophon (opens in a new tab) recording by Karl Böhm (opens in a new tab) with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (opens in a new tab).
The definitive soundtrack releases from 1996 onward restored the Karajan recording, used an altered version of György Ligeti (opens in a new tab)'s "Adventures" that was used in film without the composer's permission, and featured longer versions of other selections and additional material with a slightly different track order.
