People love to act like this was some calculated, high-budget affair. Bullshit. The whole record was tracked in about three days at Regent Sound in London, and they were literally dodging sessions for other bands just to get it finished. The title track? A throwaway they jammed out in twenty minutes because the label needed one more radio-friendly single for the length requirements. Can you imagine that shit? A filler track that turned into the fucking backbone of heavy metal. You’re spinning a 2016 Rhino remaster. It’s cleaner than the Vertigo first pressings, sure, but it lacks the grit of the original tape saturation. Those 1970 sessions were raw. No overdubs, no fancy studio trickery, just four dudes in a room playing loud enough to blow the fuses. It’s the sound of a band that knew they had something dangerous on their hands and had to capture it before the money ran out. Hell of a way to start a revolution.
