About this album
Most of this record was birthed in a hotel room while Madlib was stationed in Brazil, just him, a portable turntable, and that damn Boss SP-303 sampler. No fancy pro-tools, no pristine studio acoustics, just raw, gritty loops pulled straight from crates of bossa nova and obscure soundtrack joints. DOOM would show up, hear the track for the first time, and scribble rhymes on the back of receipts right there on the spot. It's not clean. It's not polished. It’s the sound of two geniuses fucking around without a label suit hovering over their shoulders. You’ve got Dilla’s 'Donuts' in the collection, so you already know the gospel of the SP-303. That specific boxy, compressed sound is all over this wax. Your 2016 repress isn't the original Stones Throw lacquer, but it handles the low-end bite well enough for your setup. It’s a dense, claustrophobic listen that rewards the sixty-first spin just as much as the first. Why the hell would you need another copy when this one still has enough grit to chew through your stylus? Fucking essential.
