About this album

Butch Vig had these guys tracking vocals three, four times just to get that weird, double-tracked thickness. Kurt hated it. He wanted that raw, shitty Sub Pop sound, but Vig knew if they wanted to break out of the Seattle basement, they needed that gloss. People bitch about the production being too clean, but listen to Dave’s kick drum. It hits like a hammer. That’s not an accident. That’s three weeks of frustration tracked to tape. You’ve got over a thousand records on the shelf, so you know how this goes. The reissue you’re holding? It’s a clean press, but it’s missing the grit of the original mid-90s stampers. It’s the sound of a band being forcibly polished for the radio. Still, it’s a required document. If you don't own this, you’re just pretending to curate a serious collection. Drop the needle and deal with it.
